Fearless and fun — what a great duo! I love how unpredictable the music is, and how spontaneous every moment feels. Suzanne and Bevan really capture the essence of, and welcome danger in duo playing. And that orchestral arrangement and performance of One Of Another Kind — beautiful! –Mike Holober, pianist, composer, arranger
Suzanne Pittson and Bevan Manson form an exquisite and formidable duo. These tracks demonstrate Pittson’s skills for precision on difficult bop-oriented melodies, and a gift for refreshing interpretations of familiar evergreens. Manson’s accompaniment is an extension of his masterful and imaginative arranging and orchestration chops (or perhaps the other way around?). Together, they have a chemistry that is inviting to the listener, creating a sound that is lush and yet transparent. Byrd Like, One of Another Kind, and Confirmation are all surging, effortless, and seriously swinging. Let’s hope they give us more! –Steve Wilson, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist
I began performing with pianist Bevan Manson in 2000 in the San Francisco Bay Area where we both lived at the time. Playing with Bevan required me to be interactive and completely in the moment, which was exhilarating and challenging. In 2002 we recorded a short demo of piano/voice duo tracks at Bellboy Studios in Richmond, CA, engineered by our friend Dave Bell. There were no arrangements or discussion about what we would play. This demo sat idle until 2025, and hearing the music after many years, I admire Bevan’s brilliance not only as a pianist, but his mind as a composer and arranger (in both classical and jazz) to create spontaneous frameworks that allowed me to improvise and interact creatively. It could have only happened in this way between the two of us at that moment — for that reason, I decided to release this recording. In 2009, Bevan invited me to sing on his arrangement of Freddie Hubbard’s One of Another Kind (lyric title: Out of the Hub) for jazz orchestra and vocalist. That track remained unfinished until 2023 when we recorded additional instrumental parts, uncovered hidden passages from the original session, and I played a synthesizer part with my scat solo. The final track features 42 musicians recorded in Los Angeles, New Mexico and New York. Yet again, Bevan’s brilliance shines through in so many ways. I am excited for you to hear these tracks, as a moment in time that helped define my future. To me, that is the purpose of friendship. –Suzanne Pittson, May 2026
