Blues and the Abstract Truth

Butch and Butch

Music by Oliver Nelson
Lyrics by Jeff Pittson

There comes a time inside your mind
When you will find the meaning of the blues
Is something you should really look at.
Naturally people moan and groan and never seem to love what they’re doin’,
A shame that they can’t swing a more pleasant happ’ning.
So don’t give up and cry but dig what you’re doin’ right now.
Yes, right now!

A word ‘o news about the blues,
The joy and swing of ev’rything
Is not as we would like to contemplate it.
Casually speaking, blues is life and love and song, the good with the bad times,
The happy and sad times, and even the mad times.
You know you just can’t lose if you sing the blues.
Sing the blues.

Now I don’t know if Butch and Butch were real or if they ever lived
But that’s not what it’s really all about now.
Oliver Nelson wrote and played this blues for us a blues with a feeling,
With style and a meaning,
And all that he’s saying:
“You know you just can’t lose if you sing the blues.
You know you just can’t lose if you sing the blues.
You know you just can’t lose if you sing the blues.”

Blues and the Abstract Truth

Music by Oliver Nelson
Lyrics by Jeff Pittson

Listen to the truth, the truth, the only truth.
The freedom of the soul that sets you free eternally,
Impossibly in you and me,
and every man who takes a step he lives, he dies, but does it really die at all?
It never really dies, but lives the spirit of our faith and mind do travel on,
To many silver realms of endless life is what it is, no less, and nothing more.
The freedom of the soul that sets you free eternally,
Impossibly in you and me and every man who
Loves truth finds it, don’t stop, find it, listen to the truth.

Paint the colors of life with the blues and the abstract truth.
Sing the praises of love and good fortune will come to you.
Find the force of your life be in rhythm with all you see.
Take a turn in your life running headlong to destiny.
With the freedom you will always see all the colors you can really be.
Never doubting that the sound is living.
